Reduce a wall bearing stud. Need assistance fixing it.

So I did precisely what I believed I used to be too sensible to do and received an important lesson in hubris.

My stairway has an empty area underneath the touchdown. I needed to open it up and use it as storage, with a hidden bookshelf door. I minimize the opening for the area (about 30” huge) and minimize out the one stud in that span. After which understand it’s load bearing. Superior.

What I’ve carried out thus far ( [pictures here](https://imgur.com/a/O47f6Kh) )

– re-route {the electrical} up and over the opening
– construct a doubled 2×8 header (the wall helps a 12’ span above, with an attic above that)
– put the header in place on 2×4 jack studs, certainly one of which is offset from the (king?) stud by 2×4 spacers to guard the purpose the place {the electrical} exits the wall
– the jack studs had been minimize barely lengthy and wedged / hammered into place, with a purpose to push up on the minimize stud. I used to be fearful about making a safe maintain, however within the months since then there’s now a 1/4” hole between cripple stud and header (as a result of home growth with hotter temp?)

I do know I would like so as to add a tie between the header and cripple stud. And I assume I additionally want ties between header and jack studs. Ought to I improve the size of the jack studs to make up that 1/4” hole that’s there now? Anything?
